I am a scholar of Victorian and Modernist literature. I have written one book, Exquisite Masochism, and am working on another about women writers and referentiality. I have taught English literature, broadly construed, at the Undergraduate and Graduate level for over ten years.

My writing has appeared in n+1, The New York Times, Public Books, and The Los Angeles Review of Books. I live in California with my family.

I have an M.A. and a Ph.D. in English Literature from The Johns Hopkins University and an M.A. in Poetry from Boston University, where I was the Assistant Poetry Editor for Agni Magazine. I was a professor at Stanford University from 2009-2018. I did my undergraduate training in English and Creative Writing at UNC-Chapel Hill, where I was the station manager for WXYC 89.3 FM.
